Hyperpigmentation and dark spots can be a pain to deal with. Especially on South Asian skin, it feels like the smallest spot leaves behind a dark spot every time. But, there are some great products and routines to help prevent hyperpigmentation. So, in this post, I’ll walk you through how to treat and avoid hyperpigmentation.

Don’t Pick at Your Skin
I know it’s hard, but one of the worst things you can do for your skin is pick at it. Picking your skin causes inflammation which leads to hyperpigmentation. On brown skin, this happens so quickly so it’s best to leave your spots alone.
Instead, use the targeted ingredients mentioned to avoid spots and prevent hyperpigmentation from occurring in the first place.
Avoid Inflammatory Products
Being gentle is key to preventing hyperpigmentation. Any inflammation or irritation of the skin can lead to discoloration. Use gentle products, pat dry your skin, and be kind to it. If you have acne, use products that won’t dry out your skin. In addition, avoid high concentrations of chemical exfoliants or potent retinol. Gentle retinol used at night is best.
Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable
Often, with melanin-rich skin, we’ve been told that we don’t need sunscreen. This could be further from the truth. Although melanin helps from burning in the sun, it’s not foolproof. Sun exposure is one of the biggest culprits so use sunscreen daily.
Sunscreen can leave a white cast on melanin-rich skin so try a chemical formula for a lightweight, transparent formula.
Make sure it’s at least SPF 30 to prevent hyperpigmentation. In addition, use about three fingers for your face and neck to get the best protection. Try chemical formulas to avoid a white cast, and reapply every 2 hours.

Gentle Exfoliation
Gently exfoliating 1-2 times a week can help slough off the dead skin cells, keeping skin smooth and even-tone. However, to prevent hyperpigmentation, you must use gentle chemical exfoliants that won’t irritate the skin. Do not use harsh scrubs or high-concentration products.
Try lactic or glycolic acid at 5% or salicylic acid at 2%. These are gentle concentrations that won’t inflame the skin which could lead to more hyperpigmentation.
Use Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a great ingredient for brightening the skin and reducing hyperpigmentation. It helps block the enzyme that produces melanin, meaning it does an amazing job at preventing hyperpigmentation and fading dark spots. Additionally, it helps boost the efficacy of your sunscreen, so you get a 2-for-1 in benefits.
Use a Vitamin C serum in the mornings before applying your moisturizer and sunscreen.

Try a Powerhouse Product
There are many amazing products on the market now that not only help fade dark spots but prevent hyperpigmentation. Two of my favorites are from Topicals and Maelove. All these ingredients help fade and prevent hyperpigmentation.
The Fade Away Serum by Maelove uses ingredients like Alpha Arbutin and Kojic Acid to lighten dark spots. Their Vitamin C Glow Maker Serum is also amazing.
The Faded Serum by Topicals uses Tranexamic Acid and Azelaic Acid to help do similar things.
Morning Routine to Prevent Hyperpigmentation
In the morning, start by washing your face. Pat dry and follow up with a Vitamin C serum. Moisturize and finish off with a good dose of your favorite sunscreen. Do this routine daily for glowing skin that gets rid of dark spots.
Evening Routine to Treat Dark Spots
In the evening, start by washing your face and pat drying. Follow up with one of the powerhouse serums mentioned earlier. You can also find these ingredients in other products if you prefer. Lastly, follow up with your moisturizer. Once a week, use a chemical exfoliant instead of the serum.
