We live in a consumerist society that always tells us to buy more of something we already have. It’s how businesses make money. But eventually, this can create a lot of clutter in our lives. So, in this blog post, I’ll walk through 7 easy ways to simplify your life in the new year so there’s room for growth and resolutions.

Meal Prep Simple Things
Meal prepping was all the trend back in 2022, but if you don’t like to eat the same thing every day, this will not simplify your life. Instead, you should prepare items that make the process easier. For instance, you can chop and keep onions, tomatoes, and veggies at the beginning of the week. This cuts your cooking time in half. I can easily make pasta one day and Asian noodles the next. You can also prep a box of tofu for a variety of dishes.

One in One Out
It is easy to keep buying and adding to your collection, especially when it comes to cosmetics and products. Enact a simple ”one in, one out” rule to simplify your life. If you want to buy a new product, another old product must go. Even better, I prefer to keep a wishlist. When I finish a product, I can pick another item to purchase and try.
Decluttering in this way helps you minimize decisions, help with decision fatigue, make your time more efficient, and of course, simplify your life.
Slow Down Eating
You might notice that it takes 30 minutes to prepare a meal, but you finish it in about 5 minutes. In today’s world, we tend to eat faster than we should. By slowing down, and eating more purposefully, you can simplify your life.

Slowing down means your body and mind have time to process how much you have eaten. This means you are likely to eat less, feel less sleepy, and be fuller for longer. Additionally, taking your time to eat lets your body rest from the workday. The rest will let you relax, rethink, and come back to work with a clear mind.
Take a Walk Outside
Whether you work from home or in the corporate office, you are getting less time outdoors than you need. Simply taking a 5-minute walk outside can have a huge impact on your stress and mood. Taking a walk really does simplify your life by preventing you from overthinking, reconnecting with nature, and realizing what actually matters.
Try taking a walk next time you feel overwhelmed and you’ll realize this is probably the quickest way to simplify your life right away.
Purchase Sustainably
One of the best ways to simplify your life is by simply buying less. While this might be easier said than done, it is an important goal to work towards. When you buy a cheap, low-quality item, you’ll be repurchasing the same thing more often. This means you are spending time, money, and space. Instead, you can choose to simplify your life.
For example, when you buy a $5 white shirt from Target, it looks great. After 5 years, the shirt no longer keeps its shape. So you go and buy another white shirt while the old Target one still hangs in your closet. It is a waste of time, money, space, and resources. Instead, invest in a $20 white shirt that will last you for years. Your life will be simpler.
Find Enjoyment in Routines
Routines can quickly end up feeling like chores. Chores can quickly end up feeling like another task that needs to be completed. An easy way to simplify your life is to try and enjoy the daily tasks that you need to get done.

For example, put on some music while you are cooking or cleaning in the kitchen. Now you are in a good mood while doing the dishes. It’s a productive resting period now rather than a drag. Put on the TV while folding laundry or hop on a call with your friend while cooking dinner. These small changes can simplify your life.
Focus on One Thing
If there is one thing you can take away from this post, it is to focus on one thing. For instance, there are a thousand distractions around us. Even in writing this blog post, I got distracted at least 5 times with random admin tasks. By focusing on the one thing that will make today fulfilling you can really simplify your life. You’ll realize a lot of other work is just a distraction that may not need your attention. Think about where you want to see your life and focus on what will get you there.
