Hair brushes often reflect how well our hair is doing. A dirty hairbrush means a dirty scalp because all the gunk will end up on your hair. Hair brushes accumulate dirt, oil, dust, and product build-up. Using a dirty hair brush means that your hair gets greasier quickly and that your hair follicles can get clogged. You don’t need to buy new hair brushes every few months, you just need to give them a good clean. In today’s blog post, I will teach you an easy way how to clean hair brushes so they are as good as new.
Gather Your Brushes
Take all the combs and brushes you have lying around and get them together. If you are going to go through the hassle of washing hair brushes, you might as well do them all together to save time and be more sustainable. This is the first step in how to clean hair brushes.
Remove the Hair and Lint
Use a hair remover tool, a comb, a pair of hair scissors, or anything with at least one sharp point to lift all the hair and dust stuck to your brushes. Take your time to do this because the more you can lift out the better. Get rid of all the hair, lint, dandruff, and anything else stuck to the bristles. Do this to all your brushes as the next step in how to clean hair brushes.
Create a Hot Soapy Bath
Next, create a soapy bath to soak the brushes in. I usually do this in my bathroom sink by using the drain stopper, but you can use a small tub or container as well. Pour a decent amount of clarifying shampoo or a little bit of dawn dish soap in hot water and make sure it foams up.
Soak Your Brushes
Step 4 in how to clean hair brushes is letting them soak in the hot soapy mixture. But the brushes bristle down into the water and make sure they are submerged. Swish them around a bit to start loosening everything up, and let them sit for at least 10-15 minutes depending on the severity of the dirtiness.
Note: Sometimes more expensive brushes have an exact method to clean them so look into that. This works for simple combs, boar bristle brushes, and tangle teaser types of paddle brushes.
Remove Any Excess Debris
This is the last step in how to clean hair brushes. After 15 minutes or so, check on your hair brushes. Move them around in the water again to get rid of loosened dirt. Use your hands or the same tool as earlier to lift any debris that remains. Once you feel like your brushes are clean, run the brushes under some water and just lay them out to dry.
Final Thoughts
This is my fool-proof way of cleaning hair brushes about every one or two weeks. This helps keep my scalp happy, my hair healthy, and my brushes lasting for longer. This only takes about 5 minutes to do since the majority of time is spent soaking the brushes in hot water. I hope this helped and let me know how it worked for you in the comments below!
