Every girl dreams of softer, shiner, and longer hair. We spend hours online finding the best products or routines for healthy and luscious hair. So, in today’s blog post, I will spill some Indian hair care secrets that have been passed down for generations. Backed by science and ayurveda, these Indian hair care secrets have helped tremendously in achieving thicker, softer, shinier hair that grows faster than I can keep up with.

Massage Your Scalp
A daily scalp massage is one of the best things you can do for your hair to promote healthy hair growth. Gentle circular motions on the scalp as well as deeper pressure on specific marma points help you destress and relieve tension while also bringing blood flow to the scalp. Remember to use your finger tips, not your nails, to avoid inflammation and irritation.
The increased blood flow helps promote hair growth and reducing the stress is an overall benefit. This is my favorite Indian hair care secrets because it feels so good and takes barely any time!
Deep Condition with Oils
Hair oils are an amazing way to bring nutrients to the scalp. Pairing this with the scalp massage above is a holy grail in Indian hair care secrets for long, shiny, healthy hair.
Great oils to use are Bhringraj oil, coconut oil, and amla oil. These oils have great nutrients for your scalp and will leave your hair feeling so soft. Add a few drops of oil to your scalp and gently massage for at least 5 minutes. Leave on for at least 20 minutes before washing the oil out. Make sure to double-shampoo to get rid of excess oil on the strands.
Fenugreek Tea
Fenugreek seeds are known to have amazing ingredients for hair growth. Steep a teaspoon each of fenugreek seeds and fennel seeds in boiling water for a hair growth elixir. Sip on it in the evenings for a calming night, or in the morning.
Fenugreek is packing with nutrients that promotes healthy hair. Many people also apply a fenugreek oil or paste to the scalp so do a bit of research and see what might work for you. Fenugreek is a powerhouse ingredient that you can incorporate.

Wash Your Hair at the Right Time
Although this varies from person to person, it is important to wash your hair only when needed. Oiler and finer hair types tend to over wash their hair while coarser hair types can sometimes go too long in between washes. The goal of washing your hair is to clean the scalp and keep it a healthy microbiome.
2-3 hair washes a week is the sweet stop for oiler hair types. Don’t wash it every day or you’ll strip your scalp of healthy oils. Washing it too infrequently can cause build-up that hurts hair growth. A good rule of thumb is about every two days or when the hair starts feeling dirty or a little smelly.
For coarser hair types, wash your hair at least once a week to keep your scalp healthy. Even if not greasy, our environment can put dirt, dust, and oils on our hair that can clog the hair follicle. Because of this, we still want to keep the scalp clean.
Sleep in Braids
The stereotypical Indian girl always went to school in braids- and for good reason. Braids are gentle on the scalp and hair strands, eliminating unnecessary stretching of the hair and tension on the scalp. It also keeps your hair out of your fair and protects it from breakage. Braids are one of the most protective hairstyles, especially when sleeping because it also helps to reduce friction from the pillow.
Plus, you’ll wake up with some beautiful waves that eliminate the need for heat styling in the morning.

Meditate
We all know that hair loss and stress are interconnected and that more stress means greater hair loss. The best long-term solution for healthy hair is reducing stress. While work and life will always come in the way, try meditating to relax your body.
Start with five slow, deep breaths to feel your body relax, and then try other techniques to reduce the tension in your muscles. Just start with a minute or two and slowly work your way up.
Final Thoughts
These Indian hair care secrets have been used for generations to decrease hair loss, promote hair growth, and keep your hair healthy and soft. Try sleeping in braids, massaging your scalp, or just taking a few deep breaths to start. I hope you found this helpful and pass on these Indian hair care secrets to a friend!
