If you have greasy hair that feels almost unmanageable, you have come to the right spot. Oily hair takes special attention to keep it looking great for more than a day. As an oily hair girl myself, these hair care routine tips are backed by years of research and trials. In this blog post, we will discuss how to create a hair care routine for oily hair.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair
As many experts say, this is an “it depends” question. It is important to wash your hair whenever it starts feeling itchy and inflamed or starts to smell. This indicates that the scalp is actually dirty rather than just having excess oil production. However, try not to wash it more than three times a week. If you are washing your hair almost every week, chances are your scalp is producing more oil to overcompensate for the dryness.
Use Sulfate Free Shampoos
Using sulfates can overstrip our hair of moisture and hydration, drying out our hair, and making our scalp think it needs to produce even more oil. Leave the sulfate shampoos for a deep cleanse once or twice a month, and in the interim, use gentler shampoos that will clean your hair while keeping your hair happy.
Opt for Natural Dry Shampoos
Especially while you are trying to prolong washes, dry shampoos will feel like a must. However, many dry shampoos contain harsh chemicals and ingredients that cause build-up on the scalp. This can clog the hair follicle and dry out the scalp, again, making your scalp produce even more oils. Try to avoid these types of dry shampoos and opt for cleaner ingredients that will still do the trick while keeping your scalp happy.

Condition Your Ends
After washing your hair, make sure to apply conditioner on your ends. Once a week, opt for a deep conditioner. This will help keep your ends moisturized and reduce breakage. As oily hair girls, we often shy away from conditioner because our scalp produces so much oil, but this is another way to signal to your scalp to start producing less oil because our strands are hydrated. This will also make it easier to distribute the oil on our scalps to the ends of our hair because brushes can glide through the strands.
Brush Your Hair Upside Down
We want to avoid as much oil on the scalp as we can, and we want to redistribute it to our strands, the drier part of our hair. Brushing your hair upside down is a great way to distribute the oil because the brush can move the oil to hair strands rather than other parts of your scalp. Try this technique in your hair care routine if your hair is looking extra shiny. Plus, your hair won’t be as flat.
Oil Your Hair
Oiling your hair once a week is a great way to bring nutrients and moisture to the hair. I know what you are thinking. Why would I oil my hair if I have oily hair? The reason this should be part of your hair care routine is because oiling your hair helps keep your strands and scalp happy. If we think about why we have oily hair, it is because our scalp is trying to provide the necessary moisture our hair needs. If we are applying that oil externally, it is signaling to our scalp that there is already enough oil so we don’t need to produce more. Massaging oil to your hair and scalp also provides blood circulation which promotes healthy hair growth and reduces hair fall.
